Writing Skills
A. Write the character sketch of Pip with the help of mind map given below.Ans. Character Sketch of Pip
Pip is the main character of the novel “Great Expectations”. He was a lonely orphan. He was brought up by his sister. His sister treated him strictly. Joe, the husband of his sister was his favourite friend. He treated him very kindly and sympathetically. He treated Pip as if he was his own son. In his early years the young Pip seems powerless to stand against injustice or to ever realize his dreams for a better life. He helped an escaped prisoner and gave him something to eat. Later on, the man arranged for his good education in London. However, as he grew into a useful worker and then an educated young man he reached an important realization. He had a successful career as a result of his own efforts and not because of the fortune that he had been promised.
B. Write a review of any story that you have read with the help of the following mind map.
Name of Book: The Old Man and the Sea
Author’s Name: Earnest Hemingway
Major Characters (and a description of each one):
1. Santiago: An old fisher man.
2. Manolin: A young boy, assistant of Santiago, the old man.
3. Marlin: A big fish.
Setting: The novel begins in Havana, Cuba. Santiago, the old man is in his cottage. The old man is sitting at a dock and talking to Manolin. 84-days have passed and the old man is unable to catch any fish.
Summary of the story: Santiago was an old man. He could not catch any fish for 84 days. On the 85th day, he was able to catch a big fish. He struggled hard to get the fish on the surface of the water. For this, he had to undergo a great deal of pain. At last, he was able to control the fish. But at night, some sharks attached the fish. The old man fought hard to defeat the sharks. Only the skeleton of big fish was left. But he never lost courage. He succeeded to carry his trophy with him. The lesson that we get from this novel is that failure or success doesn’t matter. The thing that matters is the amount of effort we put in. As old man says, “But man is not made for defeat. A man can be destroyed but not defeated.”
