Chinese New Year is a holiday that celebrates the beginning of a new year according to the Chinese lunar calendar. It is considered to be one of the most important holidays for Chinese families. The Chinese New Year starts between January 21st and February 20th. Prior to the first day of the New Year it is customary for families to thoroughly clean their houses. Another popular custom is to hang up signs and postures on doors and windows with the Chinese word “fu” written on them. On the eve of the Chinese New Year it is customary to visit relatives and partake in a large dinner where a number of specific foods are served. It is a traditional practice for adults to give children little red envelopes filled with money in order to symbolize wealth and prosperity for the coming year. Every year is associated with one of the twelve animals of the Chinese zodiac. Chinese New Year is a time when the family should come together in order to give thanks for the year that has passed, and reinvigorate themselves for the coming year.

Basant:

With the advent of spring, Basant Festival is celebrated witn pomp and show in mid February every year in Lahore. In other words this is the spring festival.

Now a days people of Lahore enjoy it by kite flying competition and by visiting the shrine of saint Madho Lal Hussain, where they assemble to pay their benediction. Lahore is becoming the main focal point for the celebration of this festival in Pakistan. Peoples traditionally fly kites on the roofs of their buildings.

MelaChiraghan (Festival of lamps): (Last week of March)

MelaChiraghan (festival of lamps) a mega event for the people of Punjab and especially for Lahorites is celebrated with traditional fervor and activities at the shrine of the renowned Sufi Shah Hussain. This festival is held for 1 week outside the Shahlimar Gardens, Lahore.

Shandur Polo Festival:

Traditional polo tournament between the teams of Chitral and Gilgit is held on the highest polo ground of the world. The Shandur Pass (Chitral district). A tent village along Shandur Lake is set up in cooperation with the local administration.

Utchal: (15-16 July)

This event is celebrated by Kalash people in Kalash Valley, Chitral. It is celebrated to mark the harvest of wheat and barley. The celebration lasts for two days dancing, singing, and feasting being its main features.

Lok Mela: (1st week of October, for one week)

The festival presents a unique opportunity to watch the culture and craft of the whole country at one place. This Folk Festival is held for one week at Islamabad. It includes folk music, songs music contests, folk dances, craftsmen at work, exhibition and sale of handicrafts.

National Horse & Cattle Show Lahore: (3rd week of November for 05 days)

It is held at Fortress Stadium, Lahore. Cattle races, cattle dances, tent-pegging, tattoo show, folk music, dances, bands, cultural floats and folk games are organized here.

The show has been described as an eloquent expression of Pakistan’s heritage and an authentic account of its agricultural and industrial achievements.

A large number of the spectators are interested in watching and appreciating the best breeds of livestock. Many derive pleasure by watching other activities such as display parade of animals, military band, and rhythmically physical exercise by the children.

Today it is an international event to which some dignitaries from abroad and visitors and foreign tourists came to see it. The organizing committee comprises of representatives of a number of agencies including army, rangers, police, industrialists and the art councils.
