Writing Skills

A. Write précis of paragraph 4.

Television brings laziness in us. A lazy man understands the news being broadcast on television. On the other hand, a newspaper requires proficiency in language in order to understand it better.

B. Write a comparative essay on “The influence of electronic media on print media. (220-250 words)

History has shown that new media has never replaced old media. When movies came into being, everyone though radio will fizzle out. But it didn’t. Then came TV. With the arrival of television, people though movies will dwindle. But they didn’t. Instead the movie-makers found opportunity in television to publicize about their films.

Similarly, with the growing emergence of electronic media, a general perception among people is that print media is on its way out. But is it really the end of road for print media?

Let me note down a few points that have often been raised to debate this very question. A frequent reason given for the electronic media’s growing popularity versus print media is its impact on environment. Many feel the tread toward increasing use of electronic media can only bring environmental benefits. Producing newspapers and magazines involve falling trees, paper waste, printing, emission of sizeable amount carbon dioxide which can be damaging to the environment.

Another argument given by many while comparing print media with electronic media is in regard with the readability is not found in dictionary. Modern technology is still considered a luxury in the rural areas. It is often perceived as something enjoyed by relatively wealthy. Of course with mobile revolution that perception is going through a change.

Some people love the physical feel of print media, the smell of paper, the sense of touchothers love the immediacy of the electronic one.

So, what I’m trying to say is that there really can’t be a clear winner. Both sorts have their own following and one will not necessarily cause the other to die. Even amidst the Internet, is a fact that magazine readership has risen in the past five years. Communication in any form is an ever evolving thing. A new medium doesn’t necessarily replace an existing one. A well-established medium will continue to prosper if it continues to give a unique experience.

Subject: Complaint against the bad condition of roads

Sir,

I am writing this letter to draw your kind attention to a very serious issue. It is about the state of roads outside my house. The condition of the road is deplorable. There are great pot-holes outside my gate due to which Mrs. Murtaza, my neighbor got the back wheel of her car stuck in it. She was ver upset. We had to rescue her with the help of two persons.

Dear Sir, these pot-holes are there because of terrible rains in my locality. Two months have passed but nothing has been done for the improvement of the road so far. Moreover, the road was inspected by the LDA inspecting team just after the rainy season was over.

Dear Sir, you are requested to send a road repair team here so that the situations may be made better. Moreover, I think it would be a better idea if the management is prepared in the future to sort out things more quickly.

Hoping a positive response.

Thanking you in anticipation.

Yours truly,

X. Y. Z.
